December 7 1995
Tonight we welcome players, officials and supporters of
Peterborough Pirates for their first ever league visit to Riverside as in the past the Chieftains have hosted the Titans, Peterborough’s reserve team, writes Mick Jordan.
Pirates currently lie a place behind Chieftains after a difficult start to the season and indeed only a recent take-over saved the side from the possibility of extinction.
Currently Pirates contain only two imports, the excellent Brent Bobyck, a player who has represented his country at the Olympics and has been switched between forward and defence this season, and Al Latreille, a quality forward player whose previous experience includes spells with Billingham and Medway and who has now taken over the coaching duties in Peterborough.
The basis of Pirates squad lies in a talented, young British line-up which includes ex-Chieftains Sean McFadyen, a strong, physical defenceman, forward Paul Slaughter and home developed players such as Stephen Johnson, Darren Cotton and Jason Porter.
Following the release of Cam Plante and the loss of Cassie Dawkins and Mark Salisbury, the Pirates have recently added ex-Medway Bears Andy Martin and former Solihull Baron Stuart Parker to their roster.
Parker, a high scoring winger is now in his second spell with the club.
Pirates have had considerable trouble with their netminding this season first losing John Noctor and then the services of Simon Wren, now recovering from a car accident.
Ex-Sheffield Scimitar Dave Singleton has stepped in and done a tremendous job for the Pirates who have also used former Billingham goal tender Ian Young as a loan keeper
MATCH REPORT
Chieftains were involved in another low scoring, tight game in which both netminders excelled with superb performances.
Simon Wren and John Finnie really deserved to be playing in a better game than this which was often short on skill and puntuated with minor penalties and trivial indiscipline.
Neither side found any rhythm in the game and it almost came as a surprise when Steven Johnson found the net in the sixteenth minute.
It looked as though the game was going to spark into life when the Pirates, starting the period with a man advantage, doubled their lead through Brent Bobyck, who coolly finished a smart Peterborough move.
Chieftains, now minus Rick Smith with a minor neck injury, conceded another minor penalty front the resulting face-off, but this time turned things their way with Victor Somfaleanu stealing the puck, skating free and coolly beating the helpless Wren to turn it 2-1.
After this sudden influx of action, the game again degenerated into a scrappy encounter with Chieftains continuing to apply the greater pressure, yet Wren was equal to everything, often helped by poor finishing.
Another Peterborough powerplay in the 56th minute resulted in a third goal when Al Lateille found Stuart Parker at the post, the former Solihull forward burying the puck into the net.
Chieftains refused to lie down however and hit back immediately when Karl Goebel fed Kuznetzov whose shot beat Wren at the near post for a second short-handed goal.
Despite Chieftains pulling Finnie for the extra skater, they could not find an equaliser as the Pirates snuck home for a fairly hollow victory.
